In addition to industrial design, technical invention and engineering-related thinking have been important parts of his work. He has been named as an inventor or co-inventor in a number of patent applications and other intellectual property records, often together with development partners on the client side. Was Matthias Ocklenburg a professional surfer? The Darmstädter Echo has described Matthias Ocklenburg as a former surf professional who later became an industrial designer. This sporting background is one part of his personal history alongside his work in design and innovation. Is Matthias Ocklenburg involved in sports leadership?Yes. In February 2025, Matthias Ocklenburg was elected First Chairman of the swimming department of DSW12 Darmstadt. His voluntary role connects his personal interest in sport with organisational and community involvement. Has Matthias Ocklenburg spoken at the Master Innovation Summit?Yes. Matthias Ocklenburg was a keynote speaker at the Master Innovation Summit at the Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design (ABK Stuttgart). He also supported the students working with Thomas Prantl, contributing his practical experience in industrial design, innovation and product development to their work. This reflects his interest in sharing knowledge, encouraging new ideas and supporting the next generation of creative thinkers.**https://vimeo.com/19935217**„Matthias Ocklenburg über die Bedeutung von Geschwindigkeit beim Innovationsprozess. Und wie man dabei trotzdem keinen Burnout bekommt.“ Was Matthias Ocklenburg an amateur cyclist?Yes. Matthias Ocklenburg was actively involved in amateur competitive cycling, taking part in road cycling, mountain bike and cyclocross events.Historical race results document his participation in competitions between 1999 and 2015. Highlights include a second-place finish at the 2004 Oelde Mountain Bike Race, third place in the 2013 GGEW Grand Prix Cross hobby category, and a 17th-place overall finish at the 2004 Rund um Köln Challenge. His cycling activities reflect a long-standing interest in endurance sports, competition and pushing personal limits.
 3. Invention & Engineering Is TOM AYTON Studio only about product styling? No. Product appearance is only one part of the work. Many projects begin with a technical principle, a functional challenge or a new way of approaching a product. The work can therefore include conceptual invention, mechanical principles, functional development and the design of the final product. Does Matthias Ocklenburg develop technical solutions himself?Yes. Technical understanding and the development of functional principles are integral to his approach. Depending on the project, this can involve developing mechanisms, exploring technical concepts or working closely with engineering specialists and client-side development teams. Is Matthias Ocklenburg named in patents? In several cases, Matthias Ocklenburg is named as an inventor or co-inventor in patent documents. These records often reflect collaborative development involving people from the client company as well. However, patent records do not provide a complete overview of his work. Some products and designs have been registered without naming every individual involved in their development. Can you give an example of a technical invention? One example is the use of involute gearing in the wine knife Ricardo Vintura by Gebr. Richartz. It illustrates how a technical principle can become an integral part of a product solution.Other examples include the Bischof Stab-Schraubzwinge, developed for Günther Rood and later sold to BESSEY, and the AMEO Powerbreather, which is associated with numerous patent claims. Does TOM AYTON Studio own the patents for its designs? Not necessarily. Ownership of a patent or other intellectual property right is different from being named as its inventor. Depending on the contractual arrangements, rights may belong to the client or another company, while the individuals who contributed to the invention are named separately.
 4. Products & Projects Does TOM AYTON Studio develop complete products or just their appearance? The scope depends on the project. Some assignments focus on industrial design and product identity; others begin with a new idea or technical principle and extend through concept development, functional refinement and product design. The PUKY LR1 balance bike is an example of a project involving a complete new product concept rather than a simple colour or graphic update. What was Matthias Ocklenburg's contribution to the PUKY LR1?A key element was the distinctive frame concept, developed through sketches with multiple angled lines in side view. The concept aimed to create a low, well-balanced weight distribution while giving the balance bike a recognisable and characteristic appearance. The design helped establish a distinctive visual direction for PUKY vehicles. Did Matthias Ocklenburg invent the Vaillant smile? No. The original idea and strategic sketch for the Vaillant smile came from a design studio in the Netherlands.Matthias Ocklenburg and his team subsequently developed the concept through many iterations and worked on implementing it across a wide range of Vaillant applications. The work also extended to other brands within the Vaillant Group, including Saunier Duval, Bongioanni, Protherm, Glow-worm and DemirDöküm.His contribution was therefore the further development and implementation of the design language, not the original invention of the smile. Are products designed by TOM AYTON Studio still available today? Some products developed many years ago remain on the market. Manufacturers may introduce new colours, materials or minor updates over time, while the essential original design remains recognisable.Examples include the DURABLE Swingclip and products from the SHERPA range. Does TOM AYTON Studio work with products that are already in production?Yes. Depending on the brief, a project can involve the development of a completely new product, the further development of an existing product, a product family or the refinement of an established design language.
 5. People & Collaborations Does TOM AYTON Studio work alone or with a team? The work has always involved collaboration. Depending on the project, this includes other designers, engineers, technical specialists, manufacturers, marketing teams and decision-makers on the client side. The composition of the team varies according to the specific challenge. Which designers and creative collaborators have worked with Matthias Ocklenburg?Over the years, a number of designers and creative partners have contributed to projects and professional phases associated with his work. These include Holger Bramsiepe and Joachim Benders during the ideenreich period; Arndt Johannes and Meike Neuhaus during the Vistapark period; and, in later years, Eva Gau, Verena Engel and Eberhard Norden. There has also been frequent and ongoing collaboration with Ralf Scheel, a former employee. Which client-side partners have been influential in projects? Many projects have been shaped by close cooperation with people inside client organisations. Among the individuals associated with different projects and partnerships are:
  • Thomas Prantl — Swarovski
  • Michael Plank — North Sails
  • Raoul Joa — Duotone
  • Mike Kellermüller — Swany Europe
  • Mehmet Inan — Sal y Limon
  • Thomas Wagner — Titan Kofferwerke
  • Jan von Hofacker — AMEO Sports
  • Udo Ermert — Vaillant Group
  • Joachim Rao — ABUS
  • Marc von Dunten — ABUS Cycling
  • Massimo Simonaggi — ABUS Italy
  • Felice Manzoni — Manzoni Design
  • Michael Biermanski — DURABLE
These names represent client-side contacts and project partners. They should not automatically be interpreted as individual co-design credits for every project. Why do different names appear on projects and awards? The names associated with projects reflect different periods, company structures, teams and client decisions. Work has appeared under names such as ideenreich, Vistapark, TOM AYTON, AYTONLAB, tom ayton // aytonlab and Matthias Ocklenburg. In some cases, a client may also choose to credit its own in-house design team or list several contributors jointly.
 6. Working Together What kind of projects does TOM AYTON Studio take on?TOM AYTON Studio works on creative direction, innovation and industrial design challenges that benefit from creative thinking and technical understanding. This can include new product concepts, product development, functional solutions, product identity and the further development of existing products. What kind of work does AYTONLAB take on?AYTONLAB focuses on additive manufacturing, experimental work, prototyping and the exploration of new technologies and production possibilities. It provides an environment for testing ideas, exploring materials and translating unconventional concepts into tangible objects and prototypes. At what stage should a company get in touch?Ideally, as early as possible — especially when a company is exploring a new product idea, facing a functional challenge or looking for a fresh direction. However, projects can also begin at a later stage when a concept already exists and needs further development or design refinement. Does TOM AYTON Studio work with start-ups as well as established companies? The approach is relevant to both. Start-ups may need help turning an idea into a viable product, while established companies may be looking to develop new products, improve existing ranges or explore new opportunities. The scope and structure of the collaboration depend on the project. Does TOM AYTON Studio collaborate with in-house development teams?Yes. Collaboration with client-side teams is often an important part of the process. Design, engineering, product management and marketing can contribute different perspectives and expertise. The aim is to combine these strengths and move the project forward together. How can a company start a project? The best starting point is a conversation about the challenge, the intended product or the opportunity. From there, the scope, objectives and possible next steps can be defined.
 7. Awards & Intellectual Property Have projects by TOM AYTON Studio received design awards?Projects associated with Matthias Ocklenburg and his various professional identities have received recognition in different contexts. The relevant credit may refer to a studio, a company, an individual or a project team, depending on the period and the circumstances. Does TOM AYTON Studio submit products for design awards? No. Products and projects are generally submitted by the respective client companies or manufacturers. The client decides whether to enter a competition and how the people and organisations involved should be credited. Why is Matthias Ocklenburg not named on every award or product? The way a project is credited depends on the client, the project structure and the period in which it was developed. Some clients choose to name external designers, others credit an internal team, and some entries list several contributors. The absence of a name in a public award record does not necessarily mean that the person was not involved in the development. What is the difference between an inventor and a patent owner? An inventor is the individual who contributed to the inventive concept described in a patent. The patent owner or applicant is the person or organisation that holds or applies for the rights. These roles can be held by different parties. In many client projects, the company owns the resulting intellectual property while the individuals involved are named as inventors or co-inventors. Why are patents and utility models important?Patents and utility models can protect technical solutions and create valuable intellectual property. They can be particularly relevant for companies developing new products, building a technology portfolio or preparing for investment, licensing or a potential company sale. Can the complete body of work from Tom Ayton be identified through patent databases? No. Patent databases are useful sources, but they do not provide a complete record of every design or development contribution. Not every product is patented, not every contributor is named in every registration, and some rights are registered under the client company. For this reason, public patent records should be treated as one source of information rather than a complete catalogue of Matthias Ocklenburg's work.
